ST. FRANCISVILLE, La. — When residents stop Kenny Havard in the grocery store to ask about the massive data center under construction in their parish, he can answer their questions.

When they want a closer look, he says, he takes them to see it.

“I told the ladies at church, if you want to go, call me Wednesday morning,” the West Feliciana Parish president said. “So, we take a group of people down there every Wednesday morning and go through the place and show it to them and explain to them the process.”

Havard says that openness helped build acceptance for Hut 8’s $10 billion River Bend project, even before it was a done deal. He updated residents at public meetings as the development took shape, discussed its water and power needs and negotiated limits on local tax incentives.
